2nd Star: #7 Brianna Beamish, UBC Okanagan (Volleyball)
In the first round of the post season, the UBC Okanagan Heat, the second ranked team in the country in women’s volleyball, took out the defending national champion Manitoba Bisons in a two-game sweep this weekend in Kelowna.
In UBC Okanagan’s two wins, fourth-year outside hitter Brianna Beamish powered her team to a three-set match and an exciting five-set victory over the visiting Manitoba club.
In straight sets on Friday night, Beamish was there consistently to score when needed. She led the team with 14 kills, and didn’t waste many swings, connecting on nearly 40 percent of her swings (.393) and contributed five blocks and 12 digs for 15.0 points in the win.
In the five-set comeback victory that dispatched the Bisons and sent the Heat to the upcoming Canada West Final Four, Beamish was devastating, finishing close to half of her attacks (.450) as she wound up with a team-high 20 kills, tied a season-high four aces from the service line while chipping in with a pair of blocks and 15 digs to score 25.5 points in the Heat’s win.
With the series win by UBC Okanagan, they move on to the Canada West Final Four and will face the Trinity Western Spartans on Thursday February 19 at 6:30 p.m. PST. Alberta, as the No. 1 seed in Canada West, will host the championships at the Saville Community Centre competition gym.
