KELOWNA, B.C. – Kieran Large is at large on the pitch, and has been swiped up by the Heat men’s soccer coach Dante Zanatta for the 2015-16 season. Victoria, BC born, Large measures in at 160 lbs and a height of 5’11″.
Large generally dominates in the central midfield position, and is the strategic playmaker on the field. His quick one-to-two touch play allows him to dance around opponents in the middle of the field and set a high pace to the game.
Moving into next season, coach Zanatta is “happy that [Kieran] has chosen UBC Okanagan and look[s] forward to having him help [the] program continue to grow.”
The Highlanders’ Prospects U18 team has claimed the talented Large for the past two years. In the previous year with the Highlanders, Large and teammates dominated in the Division II and were promoted to Division I in the Victoria Men’s League.
Large has also seen success with his high school soccer team, St Michael’s University School in Victoria. St Michael’s won the AA provincial this past season, with Large assisting the game winning goal in the championship.
Large’s connections with coach Zanatta began at the U13 level when Zanatta coached provincial team players living in Victoria. Large also played with Dante’s son, Dario Zanatta, on the Metro team at the U14 level.
“Kieran is a hard working skilled midfielder that covers a lot of the field,” states Coach Zanatta. “Being a former member of our Provincial team program and having played in the men’s league in Victoria will help him with the transition to CIS.”
Large hopes to bring “vision and the control [that Coach Zanatta] expects from all of his teams, [as well as] offensive creativity.” Large declares that he “plays with men and older guys so [he] knows the physicality of it, but obviously in the university game some of the skill levels are higher.” To prepare for the jump, Kieran states he “need[s] to come into training camp at top levels of all aspects of the game.”
“Like Dante said […], it is all about how you come into training camp, so that is the first goal,” Large continued. “If I can make that transition, then the whole year will fall into place.”
Large will continue his academics in the Faculty of Arts at UBC Okanagan. He intends to further his education to achieve his goal of attending law school. Through his research on universities, Kieran discovered that UBC is one of the “top liberal arts [schools] in Canada” and states that the benefits of a “UBC degree … definitely swayed my decision.”
Large has dedicated the majority of his time to focus on excelling in soccer, but has previously participated in St Michael’s 7s rugby program. Large enjoys activities like cross country and playing tennis, but he also has a penchant for acting. Large has had several roles in movies such as Kid Cannabis, filmed in Victoria and available on Netflix, and a crime thriller called Poker Night which is set to be released sometime in May.
For now Kieran is focused on soccer and school but if Hollywood comes calling Kieran hasn’t ruled that career path out stating that “acting is something that I truly enjoy and I am still considering it as a possible direction for my future,” after his university career with the UBC Okanagan Heat.
