Another successful Hindson Cup has the University of Alberta take top prize on Saturday.
KELOWNA, BC – The Heat finish second to the University of Alberta in the fifth annual Hindson Cup.
An upsetting loss against the Golden Bears in their first game of the annual tournament honouring the great Canadian rugby player Ro Hindson, ultimately cost the Cup championship away from the Heat, after winning the title the past two consecutive years.
This is Alberta's first Cup win and the first time the final hasn't been decided between the University of Calgary or the UBC Okanagan Heat.
UBC Okanagan had a slow start in the rain at City Park, on Saturday. An early try from the Golden Bears had the Heat trailing the entire game. Steven Tostenson put the Heat on the score board with a try in the second half but it was not enough to come back from the deficit and the final score was 15-5 in favour of U of A.
In the final match of the day, the Heat were victorious in the close match over the University of Calgary, 30-29. Colin Stoiner, named back line man of the match, scored a try as well as two penalty kicks, and two conversions for the Heat. Stoiner was the highest scorer of the game. Kai Duchnycz, Pete Alexander and Markan Katinic put points on the score board scoring a try a piece.
The Golden Bears won against the Barbarians, a mixed team of the Crows- local Kelowna club team- and rookie UBCO players 22-0, to claim the title of champions of the Hindson Cup for the first time in the history of the tournament.
In the first game of the day, the University of Calgary won against the young Barbarians 38-0.
In their last home game of the season, the UBC Okanagan women's team fell to Simon Fraser University 29-5. The lone try was scored by Kate Smith, on a near full length field run. The Heat face off in Victoria for their last game of the season next week.
