Female Third Star – Brianna Beamish
UBCO Heat volleyball
Game log: Friday, January 29 – 11 kills, nine digs, two aces in 3-1 W vs. UBC / Saturday, January 30 – 16 kills, 20 digs, one ace in 3-0 W vs. UBC.
The UBC Okanagan Heat women’s volleyball team has had a remarkably quick rise to the elite level of volleyball in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and the league they play in, Canada West.
The Heat had bested every team in league play, in just their first two seasons, except for the perennial power and sister campus school, the UBC Thunderbirds.
Brianna Beamish, a lower mainland native, as a fifth year led her team on both nights to clip the ‘Birds and remove that monkey of the back of this still young program.
The weekend sweep was done in impressive fashion. UBCO won six of the seven sets played, reached the technical timeout first in all six of their set wins, and outside of the set they lost never trailed by more than two points the entire weekend.
Friday night in front of a raucous and large crowd Brianna Beamish was the leading point-getter in the historic win with 11 kills and two aces. Set scores: 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21).
Saturday night Beamish and UBC Okanagan, with the monkey of their back, played loose and free, Brianna finished with a match leading 17.0 points and a match leading 16 kills on just 33 swings at a .364% attack rate. The outside hitter also led with 20 digs and added another ace for good measure.
Set scores: 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21)
