KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Men’s basketball team were unable to take the first game of the weekend series (81-65) against the Fraser Valley Cascades. With the loss the Heat’s record drops to (7-8) and improves Cascades record to (10-5).

Fraser Valley didn't have any trouble shooting the ball on the road Friday night as the Cascades sizzled shooting 54.7-percent from the floor on the night. That was the best night a team has had shooting against UBC Okanagan this season. The Heat managed to stick around and have the  lead down to just six early in the fourth quarter, thanks in large part to the team's efforts from the three point line. For the fourth time this season the Heat hit 10 threes (10-31, 32.3%).

The Heat had four of its players making double digits in tonight's game against the Cascades. The Heat were led by third year Cameron Friesen and Aldrich Berrios who scored 13 points each. Following was senior, Mitch Goodwin with 12 points and eight rebounds. Goodwin was able to shoot and efficient (5-9) 55 percent from the field. Second year Randall Mosca finished with 10 points.

The Cascades had four of its player make double digits tonight and were led by Nate Brown with 18 points. Manny Dulay was able to follow with 16 points and shot (7-10) 70 percent from the field. Kevon Parchment had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists and Vijay Dhillon followed with 12 points.

The Heat struggled from the firld shooting just ( 22-63) 34.9 percent, yet were nearly perfect (11-13) from the charity stripe.

UFV was also effective from beyond the arc hitting 38.9 percent (7-18) and although they made numerous trips to the free throw line the Cascades shot (16-23) 69.3 percent.

The first quarter started off with high energy as both team were quick to score tying at 5, 11, and 13 points before Fraser Valley was able to go on a 6-1 scoring streak to take the first 19-14 from the Heat.

The Heat were led by Cameron Friesen who started the quarter with the first five points for the Kelowna squad, Nate Brown matched the UBC Okanagan forward with five for UFV.

The second quarter started off with promise for the Heat as they were able to go on a 7-2 scoring streak to narrow the gap to (21-19). A made three point shot and layup by Friesen put the Heat into the lead (26-25).  This lead was quick to evaporate as Fraser Valley’s effective shooting and a (10-0) scoring streak allowed the visitors to finish the half up (41-31).

Hitting five threes in the third the Heat were able to chisel into the Cascades lead out scoring UFV (22-17). Aldrich Berrios hit two of those five threes and UBCO trailed by just seven (60-53)  with 10 minutes left.

Getting shutout from three (0-4)  in the fourth erased any chance for a for another Heat comeback on their home court. The Cascades were to efficient on offense, scoring 21 in the quarter and finished off the Heat by a final score of (81-65)

Undersized, UBC Okaagan won the battle of the boards in tonight’s matchup against the Cascades and claimed 36 rebounds compared to the Cascades 30. Kevon Parchment hauled in nine boards to lead UFV, Manny Dulay finished with six. Following Goodwin's eight boards for UBCO was Brian Ademba with seven and Cam Freisen with six.

The Heat will be looking for redemption as the series continues tomorrow at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium tip off is at 7 p.m.

HEAT NOTES: The UBC Okanagan men's basketball team was able to score 10 three point shots in tonights game which helped raised $500 dollars for KidsSport. The Women's team was able to make 6 for $300 dollars to combine for a total of $800 dollars to help kids in the Okanagan play sports.
