This week: - The Heat will be hosting the Grant MacEwan Griffins at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium this weekend. The First game will take place on Friday, February 12th with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m.. The Second game will follow Saturday February 13th with a start time of 7 p.m.
Current Form: The UBC Okanagan men’s basketball team ended their fourth straight weekend of home games with a split against the Fraser Valley Cascades. With the split, the Heat have a record of (8-8) and remain in the third place spot in the Explorer Division.
Standings: Currently in third place with four games to play the Heat could qualify for the playoffs by sweeping MacEwan this weekend and a Mount Royal loss.
Schedule remaining: At (14-2) Thompson Rivers has clinched top seed.

Key Players: Senior, Mitch Goodwin has taken control of the scoring for the Heat as he finished the weekend series against UFV with a combined 36 points. In Saturday night's win against the Cascades, Goodwin was able to shoot an impressive (10-15) 66.6 percent from the field and (3-5) 60 percent from beyond the arch. Second year guard, Aldrich Berrios is also remaining on top of the score sheet for the Heat as he is averaging 15.5 points per game and has hit (47-139) 33.8 percent from beyond the arch putting him second in the Canada West standings for that category.
Key Stat- The weekend series between the Griffins and Heat will determined from the field as both teams have similar shooting percentages. The Griffins are shooting 40.8 percent from the field (11th) compared to the Heat’s 40.2 percent (13th). MacEwan is also shooting 32.7 percent from beyond the arch (8th) compared to the Heat’s 32.4 percent (10th). The Heat will also have to be determined as they are tied with MacEwan for total rebounds per game averaging 36.5 (14th).
Head to Head- The Heat’s record stands at 2-4 against MacEwan. The Heat were able to split the weekend series in November against MacEwan and ended the weekend with a (66-46) Saturday night loss.
*Saturday night is the annual CIS Shoot for the Cure.
This is the ninth year the CIS Women's Basketball Coaches Association dedicated a game to raise money and awareness or the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - and other related charities.
The Heat and the women's basketball team have participated in the fundraiser since 2011-12 season, the first year UBC Okanagan played as a member of the CIS.

MacEwan Griffins- The Griffins have had a good start to the second half of the season as they won half of their games (4-4) since the start of January. The Griffins finished their last weekend series to Mount Royal with a (78-73) victory. The Griffins will be looking to keep their winning streak and take the third place ranking from the Heat as MacEwan will travel to Kelowna to play the Heat this weekend.
Current Form - The Griffins go into this game with a 7-9 record and are fourth in Canada West rankings.
Key Players - Senior, Denzel James is leading the Griffins in scoring with an average of 13.7 points per game, and had a team high of 30 points in their win against Mount Royal last weekend. Thadius Galvez is contributing to the scoresheet for the Griffins and is averaging 12.9 points per game and is making 41.5 percent of his shots from the field. In addition to his contributions on offense, Galvez is also a defensive threat as he has claimed 33 steals so far this season putting him in 6th in that category.

Key performers: Third-year guard Thadius Galvez, Ogden, UT transfers to MacEwan University with strong experience at the NWAC level from Treasure Valley Community College. The Arts student averaged 20 points per game, as well as five rebounds and four assists. He also shot over 50% from the field.
Fourth-year wing Denzel James; Edmonton, AB had a successful 2014/15 Canada West season and was named a third team Canada West All-Star. The arts student averaged 17.9 points and six rebounds per game, and made 27 steals and 17 blocks on the season.
Fifth-year forward Ryan May, Daysland, AB is the first fifth-year senior in the program’s history, and returns for his final season as a team co-captain.
Fourth-year forward Keith Gerdes, Edmonton, AB returns as a team co-captain. A passionate player, the commerce student provides strong leadership on the court and is considered the heart and soul of the team.
Coach Quote: “We are very excited for the season to begin, last year was a big learning curve for everyone involved with our program,” said Griffins head coach Eric Magdanz. “We return to the court with a great recruiting class and a summer of hard work under our belts. We are eager to make a push for the post season.”
Key storyline: The Griffins return to the court after a 2014/15 inaugural Canada West season record of 7-13 for fifth-place in the Explorer Division. The addition of nine new players to the program will provide a diverse range of experience and skill, while a core group of eight veterans will provide stability and leadership on the court.
“What will define the season for us is our continued growth as a team and as a program,” stated Coach Magdanz. “We will continue our transition into Canada West by improving upon our abilities to compete every single day at the highest level.”
