KELOWNA, BC -- The UBC Okanagan men’s basketball team kick started their preseason with a (82-53) win at Immaculata Regional High School in Kelowna against the visiting VIU Mariners.

With the win the Heat begin the season with a (1-0) record while dropping the Mariners to (0-1).

Senior, Mitch Goodwin led the score sheet for the Heat as he finished the game with 28 points  and shot an impressive (10-16) 62 percent from the field and (5-9) 55 percent from beyond the arc. Following Goodwin was Aldrich Barrios with 16 points and Spencer Thomas and Noma Obaseki with eight points each.

Goodwin closed out the third with a three and then hit three straight three's in just over a minute in the fourth quarter to extend the Heat lead from nine to 18.

Early on at Immaculata the speed and excitement of the university game was evident in the high school gym as the Heat quickly went on a 5-0 run Wowing the crowd when third year Ryan Morck got loose on a break away and finished with a one hand hammer dunk just minutes int0 the game. As the Mariners challenged the Heat point for point, the first finished with the Heat up (21-18).

As the speed continued in the second, the Heat were able to maintain the lead and gain more momentum as the Kelowna squad were able to close out the half with an impressive (13-0) run, Berrios scored 13 of his 16 in the first half to send the Heat into the break with a (38-25) lead over the Mariners.

Coming out of the half the Mariner’s reshaped their play and took small runs at the lead. With these small pushes the visitors squad were able to bring the score to a six point difference before closing the third with a (56-48) lead for the Heat.

The fourth is where the Heat made their biggest push at the score. Senior Mitch Goodwin was able to go (3-3) from beyond the arc and assist his team in claiming 26 points for a (82-53) win. The closing minutes of the game saw both teams expend their benches.

The Heat will be looking to keep this momentum alive as the team will be preparing for their Heat Classic tournament that will take place at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium on Oct. 14-16.
