Men's Basketball (Exhibition)

KELOWNA, BC -- The UBC Okanagan men’s basketball team hosted their first Heat Classic Invitational tournament at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium this past weekend.
The three day event welcomed the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, the MacEwan Griffins, and the Thompson Rivers WolfPack for five total games. With the men in their first of many preseason games, the Heat women’s basketball team also hosted Quest University and MacEwan.
As many of the teams joined for their first weekend of preseason play, the three day event began Friday (Oct. 14) with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack playing the MacEwan Griffins. The two former Explorer Division foes kicked off the weekend, the ‘Pack and Griffins began with a hard fought battle on the hardwood that led the game into overtime. With both teams knotted at 69 the Griffins were able to pull ahead in the last few plays of the game to give them a (80-74) win.
The second game of the event on Friday night brought the hometown Heat against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. With coach Pete Guarasci entering his fifth year as head of the team, Guarasci was able to showcase his young team and build the strengths of his new roster. As the Heat battled for the first time on their home court this season they were able to challenge the Saskatchewan squad but were unable to match the scoring of the Huskies and lost (68-56).
Saturday brought on exciting competition as the first game of the day was played by Thompson Rivers and the University of Saskatchewan. With a second win of the weekend for the Huskies, the Saskatoon squad was able to push a second straight game into overtime. With the fourth quarter ending with a tied score of 63, the Huskies were able to out score the ‘Pack 16- 8 giving the Huskies a (79-71) win.
The second game of the day was played by the hometown Heat and the Macewan Griffins. With the Heat unable to find a rhythm early in the game. The Griffins were able to take advantage of the hardwood and finished the game with a (76-62) loss to the Griffins.
In the final day of the event, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies played the MacEwan Griffins in a battle of the two unbeaten teams of the tournament. Saskatchewan found their groove on offense and cruised to a 89-71 victory over the Griffins to finish0ed (3-0) at the tournament. MacEwan finished (2-1).
The UBC Okanagan men’s basketball team come out of this weekends event with a record of (0-2) and a preseason record of (1-2). With the weekend's event ending the Heat will continue their preseason in Montreal where they will in the Redbird Classic at McGill University (Oct. 21-23).
The first game will be played against McGill on Friday ( Oct. 21) with a start time of 5 p.m. The second game will be played against McMaster on Saturday (Oct. 22) with a start time of 12 p.m. The third and final game of the Redbird tournament will be played on Sunday (Oct. 23) against Laurentien with a start time of 8 a.m. All games will be played at McGill gymnasium in Montreal.
