On Monday, members of the UBC Okanagan men's basketball team, along with its coaching staff, donated their time at the Hudson Road Elementary School basketball practice. (Picture submitted by Hudson Road).

KELOWNA, BC - With a bye week on the schedule during what normally is a very busy time of year the UBC Okangan men's basketball team spent Monday afternoon at Hudson Road Elementary School in West Kelowna, instructing the grade six students interested in basketball in some of the basics of the game.

Always looking for ways to maintain contact and engagement with the community, coach Pete Guarasci was more than eager to accept the Hudson Road request to have some players pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm about the game they have been lucky enough to play at the university level.

Mike Bertoia, a teacher at the school, was instrumental in connecting a large number of grade six girls and boys that were interested in basketball during the afternoon.

The Hudson Hawk players received instruction from 'Coach Pete' and the UBCO student athletes on layups, shooting, passing, and defense. The Heat also participated in several other fun drills and activities during the practice with the sixth grade students.

The following community-based initiative is just a small part of what UBC Okanagan student athletes do in the community. If you have ideas about how the Heat could make a difference with your group or event please get in touch with the athletic department.
