Dr. Lawrence D. Berg presented Do-It-Yourself  (DIY) Academic Journal Publishing in the Age of the Knowledge Enclosure.

This presentation outlined opportunities for creating new scholarly publication venues in the age of academic capitalism and the knowledge enclosure.  Dr. Berg began his discussion about the wider cultural and political economic context within which one needs to understand academic publishing.

Next, he discussed open-access and online publication as a specific ‘DIY’. Dr. Berg explained 'DIY'  means one can be employed by academics and yet contest the tendencies towards enclosure of knowledge that characterizes the current conjuncture.

Lawrence Berg is Co-Director of the Centre for Social, Spatial, & Economic Justice at UBC's Okanagan campus and a faculty member in Community, Culture and Global Studies.  He is co-founder of ACME: An International E-journal for Critical Geographies, which is now in its 11th year of publication.  Lawrence has been Co-Editor of SITES: A Journal for South Pacific Cultural Studies, and Editor-in-Chief of The Canadian Geographer/Le géographe canadien.  During the last few years, Lawrence has sat on 11 editorial boards of scholarly journals and/or academic presses. (Read more...)
