Welcome new and returning School of Engineering students!
We are excited to begin the 2018-19 academic year, and eager to start this term. While many of our graduate students have been on campus through the summer, September brings the arrival of our undergraduate students.
It is a busy and often stressful time for everyone, so be patient and helpful for those around you.
The new Mechatronics option launches for students entering first year this September. We have received many questions from current students about the option, but unfortunately due to limited elective course offerings, it is only available to these students and those beginning their studies in subsequent years.
Manufacturing is a new program pending ministry approval that is slated to be available in September 2019. The School of Engineering (SOE) is also working on several other potential new programs and options to enrich students’ education experience.
The tremendous growth that our faculty is experiencing leads to a number of challenges including enrollment and space constraints. Fortunately, we have the support of senior leadership at UBC who are working diligently with us to address these challenges.
For any academic related issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to the instructor and academic advisors (located on the third floor of EME tower 2) who can answer your questions or refer you to someone who can. Furthermore, if you are feeling overwhelmed in your studies, there are many resources available on this campus such as the UBC Okanagan Health & Wellness staff (250-807-9270 or visit UNC337).
The SOE continues to experience remarkable growth. Our enrollment numbers are up and research initiatives are thriving. This success is attributed in large part to your contributions. If you haven’t already, consider participating with one of our many student groups and clubs or join one of our faculty researchers within their research teams.
As you may know, every engineering program in Canada is required to be accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The accreditation is reviewed regularly by the CEAB, and the SOE will be undergoing its regular review this fall.
The 2018-19 academic year is shaping up to be another busy year. I look forward to celebrating your successes this year.
