Disability Resource Centre recognizes record number of professors
On September 3, the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) presented its annual I Am Accessible award to a number of deserving faculty members from the Okanagan campus.
Bowen Hui, Trudy Kavanagh, Scott Reid and Carlo Rasi from the Irving K Barber School of Arts and Sciences, as well as Fern Helfand and Ruthann Lee from the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies were recognized for their accessibility efforts in their classrooms over the past year.
"Every year the DRC asks students to nominate a professor who has gone above and beyond to help their students," says Diversity Advisor Earllene Roberts.
"This year we had more nominations and award winners than ever. I'm constantly impressed by how rich and diverse the learning environment is at UBC Okanagan."
In recognition of their exceptional efforts, the DRC presented each professor with an original painting from members of Kelowna's Cool Arts Society.
The award also gave student nominators an opportunity to personally recognize each of the professors for their efforts.
Bowen Hui, computer science instructor
"Bowen was a great support for me. She combines kindness, availability, and efficient teaching techniques. It was very important for me to feel connected with my professor and thanks to this; I was able to be completely engaged during class."
Fern Helfand, associate professor of photography
"When I chose Fern as my supervisor my graduate experience became far more positive. I see her as a professor that really cares for everyone I think she should be an example for others to follow."
Trudy Kavanagh, senior instructor of physical geography
"She was extremely accommodating which greatly helped to minimize the impact of my disability. She always made time to meet with me outside of class regarding my accommodations."
Ruthann Lee, assistant professor of cultural studies
"Her positivity, enthusiasm, and clear awareness of her student’s needs made this course a seamless experience; more than accommodated, I felt effortlessly included."
Scott Reid, associate professor of biology
"Dr. Reid is one of the most, respectful, engaging, and accessible professors that UBCO has and I am thankful to have had the pleasure to have him as my professor."
Carlo Rasi, sociology instructor
"Dr. Rasi deserves this award because of his dedication to supporting all students in every way possible."
