The UBC Okanagan Junior Heat Basketball program is providing a fall training opportunity for girls born 2000 (2001 may try out). This program will cater to athletes wishing to further their individual skill development and improve their overall basketball IQ. The program will physically and mentally challenge athletes to improve their shooting, individual skills and team offensive and defensive concepts. The program will run from October 9th to November 25th.

At the conclusion of the fall training program, a Junior Heat U13 Girls (2013) club team will be selected to train throughout the winter and will participate in exhibition games/tournaments in Kelowna. The team may also enter tournaments in the Lower Mainland or Washington State. The program will conclude at the exciting Basketball BC, club team championships in Richmond, BC - April 5-7th.

About the Junior Heat

The mandate of the Jr. Heat basketball program is to develop basketball players and to assist them in reaching their potential. The vehicle used to achieve this goal is the creation of age-specific club teams selected on the basis of talent, potential and attitude. About the coaches

Rob Mitchell will be the head coach for the program. Rob is trained in the new NCCP coaching certification - ‘Competition Introduction – Advanced’ (similar to the old Level 2) and has been coaching boys and girls youth basketball for over 10 years in both Chilliwack and Kelowna minor basketball systems. He has also coached at the high school, club and Basketball BC Regional team and Regional Training Centre levels.

His philosophy is to teach players how to space, read the defense, take all good shots and create space for your teammates. This is accomplished by applying sound fundamentals such as proper footwork, ball handling, shooting, and on court communication.

Assistant coaches for the fall session will be from the UBCO Women’s team and will be attending on a regular basis.

UBCO Women’s Head Coach Heather Semeniuk oversees the Junior Heat Girls basketball club programs.
