Save-a-cup day organized for November 18

November 15, 2010

Save-a-cup day organized for November 18Join the campus community on November 18 for a free cup of coffee.

Starting at 7:30 a.m., the first 150 reusable mug holders will receive a free Tim Horton’s coffee or steeped tea (up to a $2 value) for no charge.

This year’s Waste Audit, held on October 5, revealed that single-use disposable cups make up 25 per cent of the campus’ total landfill.

Each year 1.6 billion takeout coffee cups end up in landfills in Canada. By using a reusable mug, members of the campus community can help to greatly reduce this number.

This initiative has been organized in partnership with Facilities Management, Aramark, the Sustainability Office and fourth-year nursing students Kristi Kirik, Iris Boateng, Donna Moberg, and Kristina Pap.

DIY: empty paper coffee cups can be recycled by throwing them in the blue paper and plastic recycling bins across campus. To find out more about recycling and waste management on campus visit the Sustainability Office website.
