Manufactured settings and human interaction with taxidermy specimens are documented in Fern Helfand’s work, currently exhibited at the Vernon Public Art Gallery.
Helfand, associate professor in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS), focused her research on mounted animals and the viewer — both in fabricated museum environments and private collections.
Entitled About Looking, the exhibition includes a catalogue with essays by the artist, Lubos Culen, and Rachel Poliquin.
The exhibition runs until December 21. Helfand presents her work in an artist talk at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the gallery (3228 31st Ave., Vernon, phone 250-545-3173).
