Research highlights
Joan Bottorff RN PhD, FCAHS, FAAN, Director for the Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention and a professor with UBC’s Okanagan School of Nursing, has received nearly $1,000,000 in funding from the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute to investigate a collaborative framework for cancer prevention. Donna Kurtz RN, BSN, MN, PhD, an associate professor with the School of Nursing at UBC’s Okanagan campus, returns in Fall 2013 to the Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul and the Universidade de Sao Paulo – Ribierao Preto, Brazil, where she gave invited presentations in March 2013, to work with faculty and students on initiatives in aboriginal student access and cultural safety.
Nelly Oelke BScN, RN, MN, PhD, an assistant professor with the School of Nursing at UBC’s Okanagan campus, is partnering with Interior Health Authority to pilot the integration of nurse practitioners in primary healthcare; she has been invited to the Universidade Federal Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil this fall to work with faculty and students on researching models of primary healthcare.
Barb Pesut RN, BSN, MSN, PhD, Canada Research Chair in Health, Ethics and Diversity and an associate professor with the School of Nursing at UBC’s Okanagan campus, has received Canadian Institute of Health Research (IHR) funds ($24,876) to provide a symposium on palliative nursing care and Vancouver Foundation funds ($25,000) to augment funds provided by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies to conduct the TCARE project on palliative care in rural areas. Carole Robinson RN, MSN, PhD, an associate professor with the School of Nursing at UBC’s Okanagan campus, has received more than $70,000 from the BC Cancer Foundation to study supports for palliative home care cancer patients and their family caregivers and to investigate goals of care and advance care planning discussions in routine oncology practice. Kathy Rush RN, BN, MSc, PhD, an associate professor with the School of Nursing at UBC’s Okanagan campus, has received CIHR funds ($100,000) to investigate an integrated model of care for managing atrial fibrillation in older adults in rural and smaller urban communities.
New Courses
Carole Robinson RN, MSN, PhD, has been invited to the Universidade Federal Rio de Janeiro and the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo, Brazil, this fall to share her work in family nursing research, which is being incorporated into Nursing 531: Advanced Family Focused Nursing Practice, a new interprofessional graduate course offered at UBC Okanagan’s Interdisciplinary Family Clinic where students can practice their skills with actual clients and a group of experienced family therapists. Joan Bottorff, professor with UBC’s Okanagan School of Nursing, shared the Researcher of the Year award at UBC’s Okanagan Campus with Prof. Stephen Porter with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. As a mentor and researcher, Bottorff is a co-applicant and faculty supervisor on seven research grants that total more than $12 million including the 2012 Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute award for $928,000. Her research accomplishments in nurse-patient relationships, cancer control, and health promotion have been acknowledged nationally and internationally, including her recent induction into the American Academy of Nursing as a fellow, a rare honor for a Canadian nurse academic to receive.
From September 30 to October 5, 2013, the School of Nursing will host visiting scholar Kate Gerrish RGN, RM, BN, MSc, PhD, professor of Nursing Research in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Sheffield and adjunct professor with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. Gerrish holds a joint appointment between the University and the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, providing research leadership to academic nursing staff in the School and leading the strategic development of nursing research and practice development to support the Trust’s research infrastructure. Gerrish’s health services research program spans the inter-related areas of knowledge translation, nursing development and policy relevant research. She is implementation lead for the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) for South Yorkshire, a five year, £20 million program of applied research and implementation of research findings in the self-management of long-term conditions. She also leads the Translating Knowledge into Action implementation theme within CLAHRC: a £2 million program to trial innovative strategies for knowledge translation in response to NHS priorities.
