It was an enchanting evening, evoking the familiar and the exotic.
UBC Okanagan’s Engineering Graduate Student Society Cultural Night last Tuesday was a wonderful event celebrating diversity and sharing dinner featuring dishes from around the world. International students representing China, Bangladesh, Iran, India, China, Malaysia and South America, clad in finery from their home countries, enthusiastically entertained a crowd with dancing, singing and music.
The poignant strains of traditional Iranian music wafted through the UNC Ballroom as Mohammad Paknahad on the sitar and Shelir Ebrahimi on tar gave a soulful performance.
Amith K. Salhotra performed a fast-paced dance from his native India that got the entire crowd on its feet, as Hajjat Rezai Nejad tried a few steps.
Nivedita Mahesh and Nilufar Islam performed a stirring and colourful rendition of Bangladeshi and Indian dancing.
