UBC Okanagan has begun the process of phasing in gender-neutral washrooms in every major building across campus. The installation of the first multi-stall gender-neutral washroom began this spring in The Commons.
Given that multi-stall washrooms in all other buildings are not currently set up for a gender-neutral environment, designated single-stall washrooms in each existing building have been converted to fully inclusive, gender-neutral washrooms that comply with the Canadian Human Rights Act.
All washrooms include standardized signage denoting whether a given washroom is single-stall or multi-stall, gender-neutral or gender-specific.
Gender-neutral washrooms are not a new development on the UBC Okanagan campus, and they play an important part in signalling to our trans and non-binary students, staff and faculty that they are welcome here on campus.
The addition of multi-stall gender-neutral washrooms is an important part of creating an inclusive and welcoming campus, where all students, faculty and staff have access to the washroom(s) that they are comfortable using.
