The autonomous floor scrubber at UBC Okanagan has a new look and name. We are happy to introduce—ScrubBot.
The robot scrubber was introduced to campus in the EME building by BEST – For a cleaner world in January. This spring, UBCO students, faculty and staff were invited to enter a naming contest to celebrate the new robotic floor machine.
The contest garnered a great response—more than 600 entries were received via Instagram and an online survey. A big thank you to all participants for your entries.
Congratulations to our three winners, who submitted various spellings of ScrubBot:
- Aakash Singh, undergraduate student in computer science
- Mehran Shirazi, faculty member from the School of Engineering
- Leo Pollentes, staff member of BEST
The winning name was selected by a panel of UBCO judges, and a custom design wrap was installed on ScrubBot in June.
Honorable mentions also go to Lightning McClean, R2 Clean2, Moptimus Prime, Floor-E and Okanobot.
ScrubBot is officially on duty, clearing the floors of the EME.
“We were excited to welcome the autonomous floor scrubber to UBCO earlier this year and we’re thrilled it now has a fun name thanks to our campus community,” said Jamie Armer, Manager of Custodial and Waste Services at UBC Okanagan. “With this innovative technology, we can continuously keep our floors sparkling clean throughout the day, even during Okanagan winters when salt and dirt find their way inside.”
“Thanks to the scrubber’s advanced autonomy, the cleaning team can now work more efficiently than ever before and focus on other high-priority cleaning tasks,” said Alex Vracarevic, BEST’s Area Manager for Kelowna. “We’re happy to provide a chemical-free solution to help keep UBCO’s campus shining.”
