UBC student creative projects focus on Kelowna neighbourhood

The curtain is being pulled back on Kelowna’s Mission neighbourhood to showcase its past, present and future.
UBC Creative Writing and Visual Arts students will unwrap a series of proposed projects that will provide a creative vision of Mission. The proposals are part of the initiative Dig Your Neighbourhood (DYN)—a package of art created by UBC students and faculty, particularly for residents of specific neighbourhoods in Kelowna.
The public is invited to come by the Capital News Centre, 4105 Gordon Drive, on Saturday, November 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. People are encouraged to offer comments, suggestions, and critiques about what’s being created for the lower Mission. Local businesses and organizations are also invited to get information about sponsoring packages for newcomers to the area. For a sneak preview, interested people can visit UBC’s FINA Gallery during the day until Friday October 31, where the project proposals will also be on display.
Past Dig Your Neighbourhood packages have been created for the North End and Rutland and have included calendars, cards, board games, books of poetry, graphic novels, CDs and all kinds of fiction and one-of-a-kind guidebooks that are neighbourhood-specific. The earlier packages will be on display at the Mission branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, before the Capital News Centre event.

The project is overseen by Nancy Holmes, associate professor in Creative Writing, and Aleksandra Dulic, assistant professor in Visual Art. DYN is an initiative of the Department of Creative Studies in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC; Lake Publishing Society; and The Eco Art Incubator, with support from the Capital News Centre, the Okanagan Regional Library, and the Welcome Wagon Ltd.
