UBC Okanagan’s Career Development and Alumni Services office is hosting an open house next Wednesday to help more employers and students make connections in today’s red-hot Okanagan job market.
“We’re looking forward to meeting employers and discussing their recruitment needs, and introducing them to the full range of services and programs available through our Career Centre,” says Shawn Swallow, Manager of Career Development and Alumni Services at UBC Okanagan.
In September, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada reported that B.C.’s youth unemployment rate, at 8.7 per cent, represents an all-time record low. Recent media reports say some Okanagan employers are finding it difficult to fill vacancies.
Career Services at UBC Okanagan is a full-service career center assisting students with career planning and job search decisions, and helping employers connect with students and alumni. Services include an interactive online system called Workopolis, through which students and alumni can access employment opportunities.
“The open house is a great opportunity for Okanagan employers to learn about their options for recruiting UBC Okanagan students,” Swallow says. “We can help them with job postings through Workopolis, career fairs and employer information sessions.”
The event is being held to coincide with Canada Career Week, October 30 to November 5. Okanagan employers and students are welcome to attend the open house, which takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, November 2, in the main foyer of the Student Services Building at UBC Okanagan’s campus, 3333 University Way, Kelowna.
