La Pieta leads UBC Okanagan’s free concert series

January 23, 2006

A powerful debut concert featuring La Pieta kicks off a new series of free lunch-hour concerts at UBC Okanagan this Friday afternoon. The Minds and Music series of matinee concerts are open to the public, and will see a variety of performers on campus over the next two months.

La Pieta, an all-female string ensemble led by Angele Dubeau and featuring some of Canada’s finest female musicians, will perform on stage in the Student Services building’s main foyer at 12:30 p.m., Friday, January 27.

“La Pieta is playing to sold-out concerts in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton this week,” says concert organizer Manuela Ungureanu, Associate Professor of Philosophy. “This is a rare opportunity to hear them and to learn about their music.  The title of their concert — Passion — is suggestive of their exciting selection of Italian, Spanish, Argentinian and Romanian music.”

UBC Okanagan faculty members from arts and sciences, and creative and critical studies, will briefly speak about each piece of music, adding an extra dimension of learning to the concert experience.  After the concert, Ms. Dubeau will also take questions from the audience, and all musicians will join the public for refreshments.

“This concert has something for students on campus and the entire community — our Spanish students, students taking French courses, women’s studies, history, psychology, cultural studies, philosophy and anyone who appreciates great music, enriching commentaries, and fun conversation,” Ungureanu says.

The second and third concerts in the series will showcase the Okanagan Symphony and other performers from the Valley.

On February 9, the Minds and Music series features the Okanagan Symphony’s Shakespeare in Love – a Valentine’s celebration with pieces by composers Weber, Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Mendelssohn.

A date for the March concert has not yet been finalized.

All concerts take place in the main foyer of the Student Services Centre at UBC Okanagan, 3333 University Way, Kelowna, B.C.
