UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College have appointed Peter Rochfort, on an interim basis, to take over the reigns of the Women’s Soccer Team. Rochfort will take over for Kevin Hearne who recently died tragically in a traffic accident.
“Under the very sad and unfortunate circumstances, I am pleased to have Peter Rochfort re-join our staff. He is a strong technical coach, has an obvious passion for the game and recognizes the role that fitness plays in success on the field,” says Rob Johnson, UBC Okanagan Director of Athletics.
“We will miss Kevin very much, both as a friend and coach,” says Johnson. “His passion for soccer, both as a player and coach, was extraordinary.”
Rochfort is no stranger to the Women’s Soccer program. He coached the Okanagan University College Lakers Women’s Soccer team from 2001 – 2004. Rochfort, who specializes in goaltender training, has a Level 2 coaching certificate (NCCP) in Practical and Theory.
He started coaching soccer at the community level in 1986 and served as an assistant coach for six years with the Central Okanagan Youth Soccer Association Selects during which the team won the Provincial title five years in a row. Rochfort also co-coached the Girls U-15 team that advanced to the Nationals in 1995.
Rochfort will begin his new coaching duties effective immediately.
As part of the transition process, UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College have permission from the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletics Association (BCCAA) to field joint teams for the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons.
