Helping a great idea keep growing

August 3, 2011

Fundraiser will aid pesticide-free garden project

The Preservation Farm Initiative is looking for public support to keep growing.

The initiative, a collection of student and faculty researchers committed to researching, growing, and sharing the benefits of naturally grown, pesticide-free produce, will be holding a launch party and silent auction fundraiser on Tuesday Aug. 9 in the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus courtyard from 4 to 7 p.m.

The event will feature live music by the Celtic rock band The Malarkeys and Dillon Jamieson along with food, refreshments and information about the initiative. A number of items donated by local merchants will be up for auction.

The program donates a portion of the food grown to the Kelowna Gospel Mission and the food bank with the remainder being sold at the Kelowna Farmer’s Market. Several students are employed to tend the garden and the project is dependent on donations to hire the students.

Advance tickets are $8 for students or $10 for non-students. Tickets are also available at the event for $12. To buy tickets, or find out more, email preservationfarm@gmail.com, or call 250-807-8635.
