German heritage is focus of UBC research

September 29, 2011

University study will look at intercultural interactions

Claude Desmarais, Reichwald Professor in Germanic Studies (Critical Studies, FCCS) at The University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus is looking for people of German, Swiss and Austrian ancestry to share their stories.

The research project investigates how German-speaking Canadians view their cultural heritage and their culture within the Okanagan community.

UBC’s Okanagan campus is looking for people 18 years or older with ties to German culture to participate in the project that involves surveys, questionnaires and videotaped interviews to be done on campus.

The survey will delve into a person’s ties to Canadian and German culture, while the questionnaire will provide a framework to understand intercultural interaction. All of the surveys are in English.

The video interviews will be made into a short documentary which participants will view prior to public release.

For more information on the project, contact Claude Desmarais at 250-807-8635, or email him at claude.desmarais@ubc.ca.
