Tips for the new garbage bins in Okanagan campus offices

February 6, 2013

Al King

Al King, manager of Maintenance and Grounds with Facilities Management at one of many recycling stations located on campus. Office garbage and recycling bins — now combined in a black and blue “deskside recycling” unit, can be emptied at these conveniently located stations.

Over the holiday season, garbage cans in offices and workstations across campus were replaced by much smaller trash containers in a move to reduce the amount of non-garbage going to the landfill.

Facilities Management would like to remind faculty and staff how to care for these new containers:

  • Use it sparingly; recycle as much as possible.
  • Empty it regularly into the larger bagged garbage in a common area nearby.
  • Keep it clean.

The bins are used for garbage-only items such as used tissues and napkins, broken glass, foil wrappers of food items, carbon paper and lip balm or gloss sticks.

The containers are not to be used for liquids, batteries, wood or other construction materials, light bulbs, recyclable materials, Styrofoam or hazardous materials.

To find out more about the new containers, visit the Facilities Management website.
