Dancing, shopping, and eating African-inspired food is how you can help send students from UBC’s Okanagan campus to Africa to promote improved health conditions. On Saturday, November 23, UBC’s fourth-year year nursing students will host the annual Global Gala fundraiser.

It includes an African-inspired meal, dancing, live band, cash bar, silent auction, and short presentations by previous students. The event takes place at the Laurel Packing House in the heart of downtown Kelowna and begins at 6 p.m.

“We are so excited to be able to involve the community for such a great cause,” says Bonnie Smith, one of the students organizing this year’s event. “Providing better health care by bringing needed supplies and education to the people in Africa will be a huge reward to us. All the work and donations our community has put forth in supporting us so far has been really encouraging.”

Money raised at the event will allow for the purchase of healthcare supplies that will accompany the student’s visits to Ghana, Zambia, and India early next year. The students are paying for their own travel expenses and 100 per cent of the funds raised at the gala will go towards improving health care in the villages they visit.

“The goal this year is to raise $18,000, beating last year’s goal of $16,000,” says student Michelle Bolen.

Tickets to the Global Gala are $50 each or $375 for a table of eight and are available at: nursinggala2013@gmail.com or 250-874-0784.
