April 1, 2014

UBC joins partners to host event on keeping our kids, and communities, healthy

What: Communities in Motion: Healthy kids for better futures
When:  Monday, April 7, 1 to 5:30 p.m.
Where:  Mary Irwin Theatre, Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Ave., Kelowna

UBC’s Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention, the Okanagan Sustainability Institute, and Interior Health are working together to present Communities in Motion–Healthy Kids for Better Futures symposium.

The symposium takes place Monday, April 7, from 1 to 5:30 p.m., in the Mary Irwin Theatre at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 421 Cawston Ave., Kelowna.

Topics range from designing playgrounds to getting kids back into action after a suspected concussion, monitoring children’s active play, and facilitating children’s kind interactions through play. Joan Bottorff, Director of the Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention, will open the symposium and several guest moderators will help keep the discussion moving.

The event will showcase international and regional research as well as community initiatives that support physical activity among children and youth to positively impact obesity and chronic disease, and the health and wellbeing of our young people. After the formal presentations a special strategic networking session for future action will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The symposium is open to the public and  will be of special significance to those interested in supporting children’s and teens’ physical activity, including community members, parents, health professionals, coaches, educators, students, community groups, recreational planners, parks and recreation staff, and local government employees.

The symposium is free and people can attend in person, or participate by webinar. People are asked to register at: www.activekids.eventbrite.ca
