UBC creates Excellence in Teaching Award for Okanagan community

May 15, 2014

Faculty of Education calls for nominations, open to educators in the valley

The Faculty of Education at UBC’s Okanagan campus is calling for nominations for the inaugural 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award.

The new award recognizes an outstanding educator in the Okanagan. All educators who have taught for five years in the Okanagan districts (School Districts 22, 23, 83, 67, and 53) are eligible.

The winner, selected by a UBC panel, will receive a $2,000 cash prize and a sculpture created by a local Okanagan artist.

“We established this award to celebrate and recognize the exceptional educators who instill in their students a love of learning,” says Professor Sharon McCoubrey in the Faculty of Education.

“By recognizing the exceptional teaching inside and outside of the classroom setting, we hope to highlight the remarkable educators in the valley.”

The community is encouraged to submit award nominations that highlight effective teaching in Okanagan communities. Criteria includes mentoring or supporting other educators, as a contribution to the teaching profession.

Nominations for the Faculty of Education-sponsored award must be received by June 15, 2014. To submit a nomination please visit: education.ok.ubc.ca/about/alumni/Excellence_in_Teaching_Award.

The Faculty of Education is continually focused on improving educator training in the Okanagan, McCoubrey says.

“We hope to recognize leaders who work together to better equip their students with the skills and knowledge needed to flourish in a 21st century society.

The Faculty of Education invites the Okanagan to join in the celebration of teaching and learning, asking “Who was a remarkable teacher for you?”

For more information on the Excellence in Teaching Award please contact Sharon McCoubrey at
