Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre kicks off summer programs

By Patty Wellborn on May 20, 2014

Readings, talks, music and workshops on tap for bucolic UBC artist retreat

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) at UBC’s Okanagan campus is hosting a series of summer celebrations in nature starting today and continuing through August. Nearly every week over the summer season, the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre will be the site of readings, talks, music, workshops, and other cultural events.

Eco Culture Summer Season kicks off Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. with the first of The Woodshed Readings. A series of poetry, acoustic music, and public talks will take place most weeks in summer in and around the large rustic woodshed on the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre property, 969 Raymer Road, Kelowna.  The woodshed is a natural amphitheatre and seating is open in the lush green woods.

The Woodshed Readings are free and open to the public. Street parking is available on Raymer Road or in the Woodhaven Nature Conservancy parking lot. All are welcome.

The Woodshed Readings is one of a planned series of eco cultural summer programming. There will be a series of Dusk to Dawn experiences, eco art workshops, and artists in residence.  Some events are free of charge; others will be offered for a registration fee. Keep in touch with the Woodshed readings on Facebook at The Woodshed Readings and with other summer programming in upcoming announcements.

The Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre is located in a 3.5 hectare nature conservancy. With an agreement with the Regional District of the Central Okanagan which recently acquired the site, FCCS manages a large heritage home on the property that is an ideal place to hold small retreats, art projects, events, and performances.

The Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre is located in a wildland corridor along Bellevue Creek which flows from Myra Bellevue Provincial Park.  The Eco Culture Summer Season is sponsored by the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and the Eco Art Incubator, with support from the Regional District of the Central Okanagan.
