15 NSERC research grants awarded to UBC Okanagan researchers

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) today awarded 15 grants to UBC Okanagan researchers, totalling $419,545. The grants are awarded under the Discovery Grants program and the Research Tools and Instruments Grant program.

The grants area part of 3,796 research awards across Canada announced Thursday by Ed Holder, federal minister of science and technology.

Here are the Discovery grant awards for UBC Okanagan research, listed by faculty member, faculty, grant amount and project description:

  • Gordon Binsted, Faculty of Health and Social Development, $29,000, (Un)Conscious use of sensation for Action;
  • Glen Foster, Faculty of Health and Social Development, $30,000, Intermittent hypoxia and cardiopulmonary adaptation;
  • Yong Gao, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $31,000, Computational problems in artificial intelligence and network science; probabilistic analyses, graph-theoretic characterizations and algorithmic solutions;
  • Mina Hoorfar, School of Engineering, $46,545, for a Cost conformal coating machine for micro/nano fabrication processes.
  • Keekyoung Kim, School of Engineering, $23,000, Microengineered platforms for high-throughput characterization of cellular microenvironmentals;
  • Andis Klegeris, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $25,000, Do extracellularly released mitochondrial transcription factor A and cytochrome C function as intercellular signaling molecules of the brain?
  • Loic Markley, School of Engineering, $22,000, Wave manipulation using metamaterials for imaging, power concentration and telecommunications;
  • Hadi Mohmmadi, School of Engineering, $23,000, Towards the next generation of heart value prostheses; the engineering aspects;
  • Gholamreza Naser, School of Engineering, $19,000, Water demand forecasting for water distribution systems -- a chaotic approach;
  • Lael Parrott, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $34,000, Maintaining ecological resilience in regional landscapes: Scenario analysis tools to assist environmental conservation and planning decisions;
  • Jason Pither, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $22,000, Beta diversity patterns and their origins;
  • Mark Rheault, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $25,000, Molecular physiology of organic cation and metals excretion in insects;
  • Michael Russello, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $34,000, The genomic basis of adaptation to changing environments: applications to wildlife conservation;
  • Solomon Tesfamariam, School of Engineering, $21,000, Resiliency framework for seismic risk assessment and management of buildings;
  • Xiaohua Wei, Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences, $35,000, Impact of forest disturbances on hydrology in large watersheds.
