Getting back to nature is the theme for an interactive, hands-on workshop being organized by fine arts graduates from UBC’s Okanagan campus. The day-long event, at Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre, will give participants an opportunity to enjoy nature and at the same time observe and listen to artistic readings from local writers.

The event covers a range of experiences in an unhurried and intuitive style, says Woodhaven artist in residence Joanne Salé. Activities include an artist talk by Salé, and a reading by UBC graduate Lorna Tureski from her master’s thesis novel. The day will be topped off with an interactive walk through the natural landscape of Woodhaven Eco Centre.

“We will have time to consider our relationship to the land, and to explore the surrounding landscape,” explains Salé. “Taking those experiences into the workspace, we will then create a visual response using words or images. The workshop will conclude with time to share what we have observed and created.”

The workshop is for adults and Salé says participants do not need any previous visual arts or creative writing experience. Those attending are reminded to bring a lunch and water bottle, and dress appropriately for a wander in the woods.

This event takes place Sunday, June 29 and runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre, 969 Raymer Rd., Kelowna. The workshop is limited to 20 people. The $30 registration fee can be paid upon arrival for the workshop. For more details, contact Kelly Shepherd at kelshep@hotmail.com.
