UBC signs mobility agreement with European and North American partners

By Patty Wellborn on June 26, 2014

UBC one of four Canadian universities to participate in EU-funded program

At a signing ceremony in Barcelona, Spain, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal Deborah Buszard officially made UBC a partner in Nova Domus, a European Union-funded program focussed on building international research connections between Europe and North America. Witnessed by Faculty of Management Dean Roger Sugden, the signing formalized UBC’s participation in the three-year program established to facilitate the sharing of academic knowledge and to support inter-university mobility scholarships for students and researchers.

“UBC’s participation in Nova Domus is an important step in establishing new connections in Europe, one of the University’s three strategic areas of priority,” says Buszard.  “I am excited for the new relationships and collaborations that will come about through the research visits supported by Nova Domus and I look forward to continuing to support efforts to build the Okanagan campus’ international reputation.”

Nova Domus includes 11 partner universities from across Europe, the United States, and Canada, including UBC, Dalhousie University, Université de Montréal, and the University of Ottawa. Successful applicants to the program will have opportunities for extended trans-Atlantic research stays in North America or Europe, such as at the following participating European institutions:

  • Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain);
  • University of Bologna (Italy), University of Glasgow (Scotland);
  • University of Leuven (Belgium);
  • Lund University (Sweden);
  • Pompeu Fabra University (Spain);
  • and the coordinating institution, University of Barcelona (Spain).

“A priority for UBC in its participation in Nova Domus is in the building of robust, direct connections between research laboratories in Europe and at UBC,” says Sugden. “Those direct connections will form long-term benefits for the University and for communities in the BC Interior.”

Nova Domus, which stands for NetwOrk of America and Europe for Doctoral Mobility at UniversitieS, is a subsidiary of the EU’s Erasmus Mundus program, which aims to enhance the quality of higher education and promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through mobility and academic cooperation.
