Fire update for UBC Okanagan students, faculty and staff

July 18, 2014

A forest fire continues to burn in the Smith Creek area on the west side of Okanagan Lake and evacuation orders are in effect for several neighbourhoods.

The UBC Okanagan campus and facilities are not impacted by any of the fires in our region. Students and families preparing for classes in September are advised that that all University services and programs are operating as usual.

For the latest updates on the fire, see the Regional District of Central Okanagan’s Emergency website: www.cordemergency.ca

For students affected by the fire

We wish to remind students affected by the fires that our campus Health and Wellness counsellors and nursing staff are available if you need assistance at this time. Contact Health and Wellness at 250-807-9270.

For faculty and staff affected by fire

Any member of faculty or staff whose particular circumstances make it impossible to get to work are advised to please contact their direct supervisor. Supervisors are asked to contact Pauline Brandes, Director of Human Resources, at 250-807-8618 to discuss the employee’s circumstances and to determine the appropriate leave or arrangement.

Should you need support at this time, counselling and advice is available through our Employee and Family Assistance provider, Homewood Human Solutions at 1-800-663-1142.
