International Students recognized at annual awards reception dinner

This year’s International Student Awards Reception and Dinner recognized UBC Okanagan’s outstanding international undergraduate students and community leaders on September 10.

The formal dinner featured a number of awards and was attended by Deputy Vice Chancellor and Principal Deborah Buszard as well as representatives from every Okanagan campus faculty.

“These awards bring together some of the most amazing young scholars and leaders from across the globe to right here at UBC Okanagan. They bring an amazing sense of vibrancy and vitality to our campus,” Susan Allan, associate director of the International Student Initiative.

New at this year’s ceremony was the Joseph Yu Global Leadership Award, which recognizes an outstanding female international student from Asia entering her first year of a UBC undergraduate degree. The award is made on the basis of academic excellence, leadership, and financial need with preference given to a student from Hong Kong or China.

International students from either UBC campus are eligible, and this year’s award went to Okanagan campus student Zifang Jiang.

Two other categories of awards were presented at the dinner: International Scholars Awards and the International Community Achievement Awards.

International Scholars Award recipients

  • Aday Zafer Tolga from Turkey
  • An Goto from Japan
  • Hoang Ngoc Hieu from Vietnam
  • Jasper Wyant from the United Kingdom
  • Kim Tien Nguyen from Vietnam
  • Roman Karki from Nepal
  • Zuwena Haji  MacHano from Tanzania

International Community Achievement Award recipients

  • Chutipa Shiengchin from Thailand
  • Nishat Tasnim from Bangladesh
  • Marleen Van Aalst from Netherlands
  • Sanjida Khan from Bangladesh
  • Vipul Vishnoi from India
  • Yolanda Moser from Venezuela

The Joseph Yu Global Leadership Award and International Scholars Awards are given out to new UBC students. The International Community Achievement Award is given out to returning UBC students who have made a difference on campus.
