School may be out — but summer is the perfect time for teachers to get back to class. Each year, UBC Okanagan’s Faculty of Education features a Summer Speaker Series, presenting informative sessions about education, how it’s changing, and why good educators are essential.
Nel Noddings, emeritus professor from Stanford University and internationally renowned philosopher of education, will be the speaker on Wednesday, July 15 (12 to 1 p.m., Engineering, Management and Education building EME 0050).
Noddings will discuss critical thinking as a worldwide aim of education in conjunction with the caring relationships she understands to be primary to learning across all disciplines, interests, and contexts.
She gets right to the heart of the matter, asking questions such as what does engaged caring with critical issues entail? How can critical thinking enable self-other understandings? Where is the moral commitment that should accompany critical thinking and care? How might critical thinking and care change classrooms, communities, and the world?
This session, as with all weekly events of the Summer Speaker Series, is free and open to the public, especially people working in the education sector. Nodding’s talk takes place Wednesday, July 15, at noon, in the Engineering Management Education building at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
The Summer Speaker Series takes place six Wednesdays throughout the summer, and will include a variety of experts who will discuss issues, challenges, and highlights of education at all levels in BC.
