Volunteers are needed for Code Create_, a province-wide half-day event being held on January 23.
Code Create_ is held in celebration of the Hour of Code, a grassroots global computer science and digital literacy awareness campaign aimed to encourage students around the world to try an hour of computer coding.
Volunteers can have a beginner or intermediate proficiency in Java Script or other forms of coding. They will work with 3 to 5 students between the ages of 8 to 18 as they learn the basics of computer coding.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Engineering, Management and Education Building. Lunch will be provided.
The Faculty of Education’s Innovative Learning Centre is a host partner for Code Create_. To register or find out more, visit: codecreatekelowna.eventbrite.com
Question: How does this event attract 8 to 18 year olds to come to the university on a Saturday?
Hi Jim,
We actually have over 100 students currently signed up to attend the event! The student’s desire to learn coding is a great motivator, plus the free pizza doesn’t hurt. 🙂
If you have anymore questions about the event, feel free to email me at jill.dickau@ubc.ca
Thanks for your interest in the CodeCreate_ event. Maybe we’ll see you in January!

Many 8 to 18 year olds have a real interest in coding. This is evidenced by the fact that all 100 student spots have now been reserved by students representing schools throughout the Okanagan Valley.
