While many students at UBC Okanagan are hitting the books, School of Engineering students are also gearing up to talk about 3D printing, gear ratios, hovercrafts and wiring.
At the end of the academic year, engineering students complete a capstone (final year) presentation of their year-long projects. The public is invited to the following events to get a better understanding of these innovative and compelling initiatives.
What: Engineering One APSC 169: Design Showcase
Who: First-year engineering students
When: Saturday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m
Where: Richard S. Hallisey Foyer, EME Building, UBC’s Okanagan campus, Kelowna
Over the last three months, first-year students have been working on an engineering design project. The objective is to design a gearbox that will meet “client” specifications, but also addresses sustainability as a critical part of any engineering design.
More than 60 teams completed their design, which includes a set of engineering calculations, a model of the gearbox (using modelling software) and building a 3D printed prototype. The prototypes went through vigorous laboratory testing, in which both functionality and engineering sustainability were assessed.
The top 30 teams were selected for the final competition and these teams will present their models, as well as several alternative design solutions in the final stages of the competition.

What: Hovercraft Competition
Who: Second-year engineering students
When: Tuesday, April 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: Richard S. Hallisey Foyer, EME Building, UBC’s Okanagan campus, Kelowna
Second-year engineering students have been tasked with designing a hovercraft. They are working with a fictional scenario, which involves a group of Okanagan farmers looking for a novel solution to efficiently and accurately deliver pesticides to several crops in one field.
All groups will compete to determine the best performing hovercraft. Balancing performance measures related to carrying as much mass as possible, accurately delivering a series of payloads and being as quick as possible are all conflicting objectives to be maximized.
This is a fun event where parents and the public are encouraged to attend.

What: Capstone showcase
Who: Fourth-year engineering students
When: Wednesday, April 5, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Where: Richard S. Hallisey Foyer, EME Building, UBC’s Okanagan campus, Kelowna
Fourth-year engineering students will showcase the results of their final year Capstone Design Projects in a public poster presentation session. These projects were proposed by industry collaborators, faculty and students. Topics range from a number of different areas, including electric and autonomous vehicles, buildings and bridges, smart automation systems, wearable technologies and much more.
The event is open to the public, and local industry is encouraged to attend.
