12 things to do on a student budget over the holidays

Staying in the Okanagan for the holidays? Not going home to be with family and friends? Your true love not getting you that partridge in a pear tree?

Here is a list of 12 things to do on a student budget to keep the holiday blahs at bay and fill you with just the right amount of holiday cheer.

1 – Skating on the outdoor rink at Stuart Park

It’s free and sure to get you into the spirit of the season. No skates? Rent skates for $5.

2 – Candy Cane Lane

Visit the Rutland neighbourhood along Collison Road, Gramiak Road and Mary Court to vote on whose yuletide displays twinkle the brightest. Non-perishable food items for those in need are collected by participants.

3 – Bend your brain at a local trivia night

Tremendous Trivia Night Productions hold numerous weekly trivia nights across the region, including a special New Year’s Eve event at Tonics Pub.

4 – Dude, go bowling

The McCurdy Bowling Centre has all you can bowl specials every Sunday and Wednesday nights.

5 – Cheap movie nights

The Encore Theatre in West Kelowna has cheap movies every day and even cheaper movies Thursdays.

6 – Sledding!

Pick a hill: Hudson Road Elementary, Black Mountain Elementary or Predator Ridge. What’s your favourite sledding hill?

7 – Mini golf at Scandia Golf and Games

Putt 18 holes and then check out their classic arcade.

8 – Christmas carols not your thing?

Karaoke and Wing Wednesdays at Dakoda’s Sports Bar and Grill.

9 – Catch a good ol’ hockey game

Cheer on the Kelowna Rockets or the Westside Warriors. For world-class action, get your ticket to the 2019 IIHF World Junior, Championship Pre-Tournament Game. Russia faces off against Sweden at Prospera Place, December 18.

10 – Hit the slopes

There’s a bargain Big White Trip and Christmas Eve Dinner, December 24, organized by UBC Okanagan International Programs and Services.

11 – Mission Hill’s Festival of Trees

Sip the halls. Vote on your favourite themed Christmas tree and explore the winery.

12 – Give the gift of your time
