Call for Proposals: Co-funding available for summer 2019 UBC Wellbeing Scholar Projects

January 7, 2019

UBC Wellbeing and the UBC Sustainability Scholars Program are pleased to announce that for a third year, UBC staff and faculty can apply for funding support for Wellbeing Scholar Projects (five available) for the summer 2019 UBC Sustainability Scholars program.

UBC staff or faculty can propose a topic and apply for UBC Wellbeing funding. To get started, complete the proposal template outlining an applied research project of appropriate scope for a student to complete within 250 hours during the April 30 to August 10 program period and submit it to Karen.Selby@ubc.ca by end of day, Monday, January 17, 2019.

Proposed topics will be evaluated in terms of how they further the goals and principles in the Okanagan Charter for Health Promoting Campuses & Universities and UBC’s 20-Year Sustainability Strategy. Please review the Program Overview and Proposal Template document for full details.

About the UBC Wellbeing Scholars funding program

In 2017 and 2018, UBC Wellbeing co-funded a number of UBC Sustainability Scholars projects that supported UBC’s wellbeing strategies, particularly those set out in the Okanagan Charter, the 20-year Sustainability Strategy, and the People and Place strategy. UBC Wellbeing is once again offering partial funding for up to five projects that support the health, wellbeing, and social sustainability priorities on the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses.

Funding and costs

The total cost of participating in the program is $5620, of which $5250 goes to the student for 250 hours of project work (equivalent to a rate of $21/hour) and $370 goes to cover the cost of benefits (e.g., EI, CPP, and WCB). UBC Wellbeing will subsidize 50% of this cost (up to a maximum of $2810) and the successful proponent funds the remainder ($2810).

About the Sustainability Scholars Program

The UBC Sustainability Scholars Program is an innovative paid internship program that matches UBC graduate students with on- and off-campus sustainability partners to work on projects that support the advancement of sustainability in the region.

Working under the mentorship of our partner organizations, UBC Sustainability Scholars are immersed in real-world learning where they can apply their research skills and contribute to advancing organizational sustainability goals.

The program provides a unique educational experience for UBC graduate level students, and is open to Masters and PhD students from all academic disciplines.
