Student move-in day requires a small army of volunteers at UBCO

What: Student move-in day, parent conference
Who: Students moving into on-campus residences
When: Sunday, September 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: UBC’s Okanagan campus

Move-in day, the annual tradition of moving hundreds of students into their student accommodation at UBCO, takes place this Sunday.

University Way, now a pedestrian mall, will be open to one-way traffic for a few hours only on move-in day to allow access to the student residences. Carloads of students arrive at Parking Lot H throughout the morning and at designated times they will drive towards the residences. More than 200 UBC Okanagan Heat student-athletes, staff and volunteers will be ready to help unload vehicles and carry personal belongings to a student’s new room for the year.

Once all the moving boxes are unloaded and the more than 1,150 students settle in their rooms, parents and family members are encouraged to attend the annual Parent Conference. The conference begins in the gym at 1:30 p.m., providing attendees details on what they can expect during their student’s transition to university and the various UBC resources available to students. Sessions at the Parent Conference include academic expectations, resources and support for students, the financial picture, navigating a degree towards a career, and student wellbeing including physical, mental and emotional health.

At the same time, students will attend a mandatory meeting with their residence advisors. At these meetings, new residence students will meet their residence advisors, learn about residence standards, and find out about all the events taking place in their first week of classes.
