Diverse panel will share personal stories of overcoming adversity

Maintaining a grateful perspective on life can be difficult even at the best of times. But how does one find gratitude when faced with significant adversity and personal tragedy?
UBC Okanagan nursing students aim to answer that question with a public panel featuring Joshua Dueck, Francesca Amante, Mike Shaw and Lyndsey Rosevear as they discuss their unique stories of personal gratitude.
Joshua Dueck
From humble beginnings in a small mountain town to sitting on top of every major podium, from the Paralympics to the X Games, Josh Dueck’s story was featured on Ellen and is one of triumph through tragedy.
Francesca Amante
Francesca Amante was born into a family who had recently experienced the loss of her brother to a tragic car accident. From deep family loss to experiencing divorce at the young age of 23, Amante has developed a passion to serve her community and help others living through similar struggles.
Mike Shaw
UBC Okanagan alumnus and TEDx speaker Mike Shaw has made a remarkable recovery after experiencing a severe spinal cord injury in 2013. Through his experience, he’s developed strategies that use positive psychology to help others achieve their full potential and excel in the face of adversity.
Lyndsey Rosevear
Lyndsey Rosevear is a program lead for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in career services and advocacy. After having founded and run a non-profit organization in Nicaragua and after losing her own vision, she believes a life enriched with gratitude transcends adversity.
