Let’s talk mental health at UBC

January 14, 2020

On the morning of January 29, faculty and staff are invited to visit either the transit exchange or the walkway between the Arts and Sciences buildings for a coffee or tea as well as information and resources about employee mental health.

According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, in any given year, one in five Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. And on any given week, more than 500,000 Canadians are unable to go to work due to mental health problems.

At UBC, mental health and resilience is a priority identified in the Wellbeing Strategic Framework. UBC is committed to enhancing opportunities designed to support mental health, have the ability to manage stress effectively and belong to a campus that encourages free and open discussion about mental health.

Take action today by breaking the silence, show kindness in everyday actions and most importantly, educate yourself.  Consider learning more about mental health resources for staff and faculty. If you are seeking more immediate help, consider accessing the Employee and Family Program. Learn more about how to help a colleague in distress and responding to students in distress.

Curious about student mental health resources on campus? There will be events held in the EME’s Richard S. Hallisey Atrium from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and in the UNC foyer from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on January 29. There will also be a Mindfulness Yoga session open to all in UNC 334 from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

Looking to gain practical skills for responding to emerging mental health problems or crisis? Consider taking the Mental Health First Aid training session for faculty and staff on February 19 and 20. To register or find out more, visit: hr.ok.ubc.ca/events
