Dr. Peter J. Simpson named Dean, College of Graduate Studies

March 19, 2020

It is with great pleasure that we announce that effective July 1, 2020, Dr. Peter J. Simpson will assume a five-year appointment as the Dean, College of Graduate Studies.

Dr. Simpson joins UBC Okanagan after serving two consecutive terms at Western University, as Associate Vice-Provost, School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

At Western, Dr. Simpson provided graduate studies leadership to the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, overseeing almost 3300 graduate students and approximately 300 postdoctoral scholars from across the institution. Dr. Simpson brings with him a diverse range of experience that includes collective bargaining, international graduate studies partnerships, strategic graduate student recruitment and policy development in support of Indigenous students and scholarship.

Dr. Simpson will hold a tenured appointment as a Professor, in the newly established Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science, Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics.

As we prepare to welcome Dr. Simpson, I would like to give my personal thanks to Dr. Jennifer Jakobi who has acted as Dean pro tem since July 1, 2019.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to the search committee and its efforts to ensure that UBC Okanagan secured the best possible candidate to lead the College of Graduate Studies.

I look forward to working with Dr. Simpson and hope you will all join me in welcoming him to our campus.

Sincerely,

Ananya Mukherjee Reed
