Pick Your Peak Stair Challenge super climbers announced

July 31, 2020

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2020 Pick Your Peak Stair Challenge. 98 faculty and staff climbed their way to health, and this year 23 new climbers and four household teams competed.

The challenge is an annual fun and inclusive way to encourage faculty and staff to take more stairs. Stair climbing is a great way to boost cardiovascular health, build muscle and strengthen the core.

At UBC Okanagan, participants completed 210,885 flights of stairs, which is 632,655 metres of elevation, the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest 72 times.

UBC Teams

  • First place: FCCS climbed 96, 429 meters
Climbers: Shauna Oddleifson, Joanne Gervais, Wendy Mohns, Wendy White, Bobbette Armstrong-Paisley, Shelia Andrulevich and Jennifer Payson
  • Second place: Fit and Fabulous Finance Five reached 96,114 meters
Climbers: Valerie Nichol, Chris Brunet, Katelyn Singler, Manon Harvey and Elaina Suarez
  • Third place: Lactic Acid Droppers ascended 73,509 meters
Climbers: Steve Taylor, Marleen Ozel, Katrina Luvancigh, Sophie Bidgood and Heidi Madess

Congratulations to all the teams that participated.

Individual Climbers

  • First place: Emmett Campbell scaled 7,902 metres
  • Second place: Peter Arthur climbed 7, 845 metres
  • Third place: Victoria Zalamea reached 5,904 metres

Congratulations to all the individual climbers; your totals equalled climbing Mount Everest five times.

As most participants were not on campus this year, organizers invited households to participate. Team I Can Go the Social Distance, captained by Janine Woods, collected the most household points by climbing 4,551 metres. Congratulations to all the UBC household teams, together they climbed almost to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Don’t forget the Hangar Fitness Centre is now open. Faculty and staff memberships are $50, valid until August 31 2020. For information about membership and online bookings, visit: recreation.ok.ubc.ca/membership-rates
