AI-based technologies have become part of society’s everyday lives, from social media to health care. But is relying on AI too risky?
Should people be concerned about human well-being in the age of AI?
UBC Okanagan’s Department of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science presents the Roger W. Gale Symposium exploring the theme Is AI Ever Safe? Health, Well-Being, and Predictive Machines. The October 10 event will feature expert panellists who will explore two areas of great significance: the use of AI in health contexts and the effect of AI on youth.
Does AI make us healthier?
AI is not only transforming the way professionals diagnose and treat patients, but it’s also creating possibilities in preventative medicine. The first panel will discuss how human health and wellbeing can remain at the centre of the equation in the face of AI.
Growing up digitally: How is new tech affecting kids?
What does it mean to have been born a “digital native” in a world defined by online connectivity, instant information and smart devices? The second panel will explore the positives and negatives of online generations, how their experiences put them at odds with their families and why it matters for the future of Canada’s AI development.
Dr. Madeleine Ransom, co-organizer of the event and Assistant Professor of Philosophy, says the symposium comes at a crucial time given the exponential growth of AI and the extent to which it is transforming the world.
“The trajectory of AI development is not fixed. Now is the time to help shape a future worth living in. We deserve technology that enhances our mental and physical health rather than diminishes it,” Dr. Ransom says.
The Roger W. Gale Symposium in Philosophy, Politics and Economics is an annual UBCO event that focusses on current issues overlapping with the department’s interdisciplinary expertise.
This community event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
