The students have logged hours of class time, done the research, executed their strategic plans and are now ready for one of the greatest challenges of their school year.
Next week, third-year UBC Okanagan Bachelor of Management students will participate in the annual Live Case Challenge. Teams will present their experiences in running a virtual business, where they compete against fellow student teams in a simulated marketplace. To succeed, they must make strategic decisions in finance, marketing, strategy and operations, and then pivot when new challenges arise.
Sponsored by Argus Properties Ltd. since its inception in 2011, the Live Case Challenge is a signature experiential education activity for third-year students, explains Jana Martin, Lecturer with the Faculty of Management and co-organizer of the event.
“In today’s rapidly evolving job market, the Live Case Challenge plays a vital role in equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed,” says Martin. “As the simulation takes place in real-time and feedback is instant, our students quickly bridge the gap between theory and practice, which provides them with invaluable real-world experience.”
To succeed, students must be able to demonstrate strategic decision making, assess problems and develop evidence-based solutions, communicate effectively, collaborate successfully within their team and apply current knowledge to a variety of business situations.
The Live Case Challenge takes place at UBC Okanagan on Tuesday, April 8 and the public is welcome to attend. The four teams that have advanced to this stage, will compete in final presentations followed by an award ceremony and reception.
The winning team receives the coveted Argus Cup and a $3,500 prize, with runners-up earning $1,500.
