Students have just three minutes to present complex research

Some of the brightest graduate students in the Okanagan region will be racing against the clock when they battle it out in the upcoming Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
The 3MT is a competition that challenges graduate students to present their complex research using one static slide in just three short minutes. On March 6, these graduate students will have the chance to explain their research—and why it’s important—while also showcasing their ability to pitch their research in an accessible and engaging manner.
Up for grabs is a chance to win $6,000 in cash prizes, the recognition that comes with winning such a prestigious competition and a spot in the Western Regional 3MT competition.
“The 3MT competition is a wonderful way for students to demonstrate their ability to communicate and engage with a wide audience on their research,” says Miriam Grant, dean of the College of Graduate Studies at UBC’s Okanagan campus. “It also provides a platform to show the campus community what our graduate students are doing and the impact their research has at local, national and international levels.”
Developed in Australia by the University of Queensland in 2008, 3MT is a fun and challenging academic competition that enables students to showcase their research to a broad audience. In 2011, UBC was one of the first universities in North America to host a 3MT event, and today 3MT competitions are held at more than 350 universities around the world.
