A substantial increase in applications means the number of new students at UBC Okanagan will double this year.
UBC’s Kelowna campus, entering its second year of operations, will welcome 1,172 new first-year students and 407 transfer students this fall, a 123 per cent increase in total new enrollment over last year. This will bring the total enrollment to 3,987 undergraduate and graduate students (projected, Sept. 2006).
“We are very excited about the number of new students who have chosen to pursue their academic goals at UBC Okanagan,” says Dr. Doug Owram, Deputy Vice Chancellor, UBC Okanagan. “We are building something unique at this campus and it is rewarding to see that students are taking note and choosing to attend UBC Okanagan. They are central to the spirit that is taking hold as we develop our programs and facilities.”
Joining the new students at UBC Okanagan will be 25 new faculty, bringing the total number of faculty to 243 for the upcoming school year.
At UBC Vancouver’s campus, incoming first-year students will grow by five per cent to 4,955, while another 5,650 students will transfer to UBC as undergraduates or enter as graduate students. All together, 43,114 students will be enrolled at UBC’s Vancouver campus, meaning total UBC enrollment exceeds 47,000 students.
Here is a snapshot of enrollment this fall, and what’s new at UBC Okanagan:
First-year student profiles
- Applications from B.C. Grade 12 students increased 56 per cent
- Mean GPA for incoming first-year students: 79.7 per cent
- 39 per cent are from the Okanagan, 31 per cent from the Lower Mainland, 15 per cent from the rest of B.C., 10 per cent from the rest of Canada and 5 per cent from the rest of the world
- 57 per cent are female, 43 per cent male
- 51 per cent will live on campus
- 52 per cent will receive an entrance scholarship ranging in value from $500 to $40,000 for first year
Awards and Financial Aid
- UBC will provide $7.5 million in student financial support at UBC Okanagan, in the form of awards, bursaries and fellowships
- UBC is one of only two Canadian universities with a policy that no qualified domestic student be denied access for financial reasons alone
International Students
- The number of international undergraduate students registered at UBC Okanagan this fall is expected to grow by 50 per cent, from 80 to 120 students
New Academic Programs
- Performance Arts program, and four new theatre courses
- Master’s programs in Social Work and Nursing
- Master’s and PhD in Engineering
Housing
- Two new student residences will open in September and will house 350 students
- 817 single-student housing spaces are available. Another 360 student spaces are planned for 2008.
