The Heat vs Mariners rivalry continues as the two most successful programs in the BCCAA went to battle tonight at UBC Okanagan's gymnasium in Kelowna. The last time these two teams met was in the Provincial Championship Match when UBC O defeated VIU 3-0 to claim the BCCAA Championship.

The first set was a back and forth affair with neither team taking more than a 2 or 3 point lead. At 24-23, the Heat failed to capitalize on a couple of opportunities to finish out the set and let VIU back into the match. VIU then went up set point at 26-25, but the Heat fought for the next 3 points taking the first set 28-26. Set #2 was much of the same as teams traded points until the Mariners took a 3 point lead part way through that game and hung onto it, winning 25-20.

Things were not looking good for the Heat in the 3rd set; VIU had all the momentum and was dictating the flow of the match. Down 1-5, Kirsten Lawson came off the bench for the Heat and made an immediate impact from the service line, giving the Heat a 6-5 lead. That was all the UBC O squad needed as they controlled the play from then on in, outscoring VIU 49-30 the rest of the match, winning the 3rd set 25-22 and the 4th 25-15.

Leigh Dreher led the Heat scorers with 14 kills and was also the leading defender with 16 digs. Alex Basso added 11 kills and a stuff block. Sara Zaytsoff was near perfect in the middle with 7 kills, two stuff blocks and was error free. Lenai Schmidt chipped in 15 digs from the libero position.

Head Coach Steve Manuel had this to say. "We came out tonight a bit over agitated and it showed in our play early on. Once we got our emotions under control we played a lot steadier. VIU did a great job of putting us off balance, they had a good game plan and they executed it well. Kirsten Lawson did a great job for us tonight coming into the match and calming us down. Her steady play was the key and she came up with some clutch plays. I also have to credit Caitlin Nyhus for staying calm and focused through the rough patches of the match. She stepped up her game and ran a great offence from the setting position. She also was a major point producer for us with 4 kills, 5 stuff blocks and 3 aces. Cait also chipped in 11 digs out there, she came up with a huge performance."

The Heat are back on against VIU on Saturday at 1:00pm.
